What are the effects of the standard American diet?

The launch of popular documentaries like Forks Over Knives, The Game Changers and What The Health, the vegan and plant-based movement has gained a lot of momentum. With people becoming increasingly aware of the detrimental effects of the standard American diet, it has become easier to make the switch to a healthier way of eating

The SAD (standard American diet), or the diet that is eaten by most Western countries, contains a lot of animal-based products and processed foods.

1. Animal agriculture

For a starter, we know that animals are not treated well on most farms. We all know the images of massive indoor spaces cramped with animals that are fed unnatural food to grow as big and as fast as possible. Eating animals is big business. But people are slowly becoming more aware of how the animal agriculture industry works and are turning their backs towards it by going plant-based.

2. The climate

Animal agriculture also plays a major in environmental issues such as global warming. A UN climate change report urges people to reduce their meat consumption. By moving to a plant-based diet, we may help stop or slow down global warming.

3. Health

Health experts are increasingly calling for a halt to the mass consumption of animal-based foods and processed foods, and are encouraging people to eat a mostly whole food, plant-based diet.

Research is showing a clear picture:

Countries where chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity are common, people eat more animal-based foods and processed foods rich in sugar, salt and fat.

To the contrary, people in countries that consume mostly wholesome plant-based foods appear to enjoy much better health.

More and more data is coming through confirming the above. Are you ready to switch to a mostly plant-based diet?
