Different types of body shaming

We live in a world fixated on superficial appearance. The famous quote by a supermodel about nothing tastes as good as skinny shows the extent of the problem. 

When you are not comfortable in your own skin, you loathe your appearance, when looking in the mirror haunts you and when you hate the way you look, you are a victim of body shaming. 

The problem of body shaming does have social and cultural roots, but it may also be self-afflicted as well. The obsession with social media, and hence our looks has certainly not helped. 

Body shaming is not just a painful state to be in, but it also leads to grave mental health issues that require the help of the Psychologist in Lahore. The issues caused include not just eating disorders, anxiety, unhappiness, but also problems with self-esteem as well. 

Hence, it is important to understand and then address the problem of body shaming.

Types of body shaming 

Body shaming includes negative commentary and hates with regard to many different facets of your appearance. The type of body shaming then include:

Body hair 

We have seen political movements about letting the body hair grow, but still, we have not yet been able to shrug off the notion of being hairless, especially for women. They are supposed to remove all body hair, as it has direct implications for their level of attractiveness. 

Many people also start to get complexed about their body hair; you cannot moderate how much, where and when the hair grow. Therefore, shaming people about something that they absolutely cannot moderate is extremely harsh. 

Ageism 

Being discriminated with regards to your appearance at the age that you are is also part of body shaming. In this, you are either shamed for wearing fashion that is too youthful for your age or are wearing something that is aging you. 

Ageism also involves shaming the someone’s appearance after aging. Since aging is incorrigible, therefore, being nasty for something so natural is also not just infuriating but also painful.

Food intake 

Being judged for eating as much or as little as you do, for the size that your body is, is also a part of body shaming. It makes you conscious about something as basic as your diet, which is extremely unkind. Moreover, you might also be conditioned into shaming yourself, yourself, when it comes to food intake. 

Looks 

Your level of attractiveness is also a part of body shaming; you are either too pretty for people, or not pretty enough. The former is referred to as pretty-shaming, and the latter is known as lookism. 

Both these forms of body shaming deprive people of opportunities without accounting for their talents otherwise. Stereotyping is also common with pretty shaming; phrases like dumb blonde are a result of such mindset. 

Weight 

Weight is one of the most common ways people are body shamed. You are either too thin for people, or too fat. The latter is also referred to as fat shaming. 

You might then have to take snide comments on your weight, jokes being cracked at your expense, or off-handed remarks that pack insult.

We also then internalize these notions of what constitutes as the ideal weight, thanks to body shaming. Some of the bodies that are being idealized are not even humanly possible. People then opt for surgeries to look the socially approved way. 

The impact of body shaming 

Body shaming poses a lot of problems. It normalizes lack of boundaries and oppression; when you are not allowing people to like their being, you are indeed oppressing them. 
It therefore leads to mental health problems like low self-esteem, anxiety, depression that then require help from the Psychologist in Karachi. Physical health problems also ensue due to body shaming as well.
