CBD Oil For Pets

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is a product that’s derived from cannabis. It’s a type of cannabinoid, which are chemicals that are found naturally in marijuana plants. Even though it comes from a marijuana plant, CBD doesn’t cause a “high” – that’s caused by THC.

CBD oil contains CBD that’s mixed with a base oil, like coconut oil. It can be put into capsules, gummies and sprays. In South Africa, CBD oil can be sold on shelves if the maximum daily dose is 20mg or less.

There’s some controversy around cannabis products because of recreational marijuana use. However, there’s growing awareness about the benefits of CBD oil.

Perhaps you’ve tried CBD oil and you,ve found that it helps relieve some of your anxiety and pain. But what about your furry friends?

While some dog foods assist with anxiety and arthritis, similar results can come from using CBD oil. There are lots of options available in South Africa if you’re looking for CBD for dogs, in the form of oil, treats and pastilles.

Why use CBD for dogs?

Osteoarthritis  is one of the most common inflammatory conditions in dogs. Research has shown that CBD can provide substantial pain relief in dogs with arthritis when given twice a day in appropriate doses.

In theory, the anti-inflammatory benefit seenin arthritic dogs could also be seen in dogs with other types of inflammatory pain, especially back pain from intervertebral disc disease (IVDD).

CBD is a great supplemental treatment for dogs undergoing  traditional treatments. While it is not a cure for cancer, CBD may slow the growth of cancer cells while working together with radiation therapy and/or chemo.

Most importantly, CBD can improve your dog’s quality of life. It eases the pain, anxiety, inflammation, nausea, and seizures, which can all be side effects of cancer and cancer treatments. CBD can also help dogs with a loss of appetite due to cancer treatment.

Much like humans, pets experience anxiety, which may lead to troublesome behaviours such as urinating inappropriately. CBD is thought to ease nervousness and provide feelings of calm. This is because CBD may activate some of the same areas as serotonin – the hormone that makes us feel happy and relaxed.

CBD has been shown to help with epilepsy in dogs by lowering the frequency of seizures when used in combination with traditional medications. Although experts don’t fully understand how it treats seizures, CBD is thought to prevent nerves in the brain from firing too much and lower the number of electrolytes believed to have a role in seizure conditions.

Possible Side Effects of CBD in Dogs

While there is no scientific data on the side effects of CBD usage in dogs, there are potential side effects based on how it affects humans. To reduce any side effects, make sure you are using the proper dosage.

  • Dry mouth: Research has shown that CBD can decrease the production of saliva. For dogs, this would manifest as an increased thirst.
  • Lowered blood pressure: High doses of CBD have been known to cause a temporary drop in blood pressure. Even though the drop is small, it can cause a brief feeling of light-headedness.
  • Drowsiness: The calming effect of CBD can also cause slight drowsiness, especially when using higher doses.

The bottom line

Emerging research suggests that CBD may help with several pet health conditions, including anxiety, chronic pain, and seizures. Although we need more studies to confirm its benefits, many pet parents already use CBD with great results.

You should discuss using CBD with  a veterinarian who has experience treating pets with CBD before starting anything new. Together you will come up with a plan on how to safely help your furry friend feel the best they can.
